Multitasking and Interruptions during Mobile Web Tasks
نویسنده
چکیده
Common traits of mobile computing are time critical tasks and interruptions that require multitasking. Essential for success of a mobile web task is quick and accurate performance. To facilitate performance in response to interruptions, an understanding of factors that influence multitashng during mobile computing is required. This study examines the effect of anticipation and origin (i.e. instant messaging, or phone and intercom) of an interruption on user web performance on a mobile device (iPAQ h3800 pocket PC) or desktop computer. Results show that instant messages can significantly disrupt web task performance time, contrary to popular belief that phones are more disruptive. Anticipated interruptions produce better web task performance particularly on a mobile platform. As expected, web tasks take 1.5 times longer to complete during interruptions on an iPAQ compared to a desktop.

Resistance to the impact of interruptions during multitasking by healthy adults and dysexecutive patients.
Two experiments (one with healthy adult volunteers and the other with controls and dysexecutive patients) assessed the impact of interruptions on a novel test of multitasking. The test involved switching repeatedly between four tasks (block construction, bead threading, paper folding, alphabetical searching) over a 10 min period. In Experiment 1, there were four groups of 20 healthy participant...
متن کاملA Typology of Positive and Negative Self-Interruptions in Voluntary Multitasking
Human multitasking is often the result of voluntary interruptions in the performance of an ongoing task. These selfinterruptions occur in the absence of external triggers such as alerts or notifications. Compared to externally induced interruptions, self-interruptions have not received enough research attention. To address this gap, this paper develops a detailed classification of self-interrup...
متن کاملDistractions and Interruptions in the Intensive Care Unit: A Field Observation and a Simulator Experiment
Distractions and interruptions are frequently mentioned as sources of errors in healthcare research, and laboratory research has shown that they can disrupt cognition. However, the current evidence that distractions and interruptions cause patient harm is mixed. In two studies in an intensive care unit, we investigated whether and when distractions and interruptions might lead nurses to forget ...
متن کاملA work observation study of nuclear medicine technologists: interruptions, resilience and implications for patient safety
BACKGROUND Errors by nuclear medicine technologists during the preparation of radiopharmaceuticals or at other times can cause patient harm and may reflect the impact of interruptions, busy work environments and deficient systems or processes. We aimed to: (a) characterise the rate and nature of interruptions technologists experience and (b) identify strategies that support safety. METHODS We...
متن کامل1 Interruptions in medication administration –
The nature of today’s healthcare practice makes interruptions, distractions and multi-tasking commonplace, even during complex and high risk tasks.[1,2,3] Interruptions are often cited as a problem in medication safety, particularly in relation to nurses administering medication.[1,4] Previous studies [5,6] suggest an association between interruptions and medication administration errors. While...
